We're planning a road trip this spring/early summer, but the wife doesn't do the camping thing, so I need dunes that have a town nearby to allow for a motel to stay at (with pool, of course). Silver Lake is nice but small, I was thinking Little Sahara Oklahoma, or Little Sahara Utah. Does anyone know if either place has town and motels nearby? My oldest son and I ride, while the wife and youngest like to sightsee, climb rocks, etc.
If anybody knows, help me out, please.
Oh yeah, I'm in central Ohio, so 20 hours drive is about my limit.

I am near Detroit and it takes me about 20 hours to drive to Little Sahara, OK. You should be a couple hours closer. I know there is a ratty hotel nearby and a decent one about 30 minutes away. I am not sure if there is a closer decent one, but 30 minutes is not bad.

It is too bad about not being able to camp though. At Silver Lake, you have to pack up and leave anyway. Going to a hotel is not a big deal. At Little Sahara, you can ride right out of your camp site.

Delta is 40 minutes south or Nephi 35 minutes east from the dunes here. Delta is in the deset while Nephi sits on interstate I-15. You can actually hike in some areas next to the Oasis campgrounds and climb the rocks on the hill. 20hrs won't get you close to here though.

I'm never going to complain about driving 2 1/2 hours to get to the dunes again. Driving 20+ hours to get to the dunes would suck.

Hey Sandgod, what kind of temperatures am I looking at in June out there? The fact that there's some place to hike and climb is a big attraction to the nonriders in the family. If there's enough to do, specially if there's a lake around, that'll help in a longer drive.

June can get very hot. A camelback is a good thing to have. We quit riding after the first weekend in June. 90 is just to hot and it feels hotter on the sand. There are no lakes close by. The dunes sit in the desert, but the campgrounds have plenty of Cedar trees. Ever seen those God for saken ugly trees? LS, Utah does have bathrooms w/ toilets and running sinks w/ spickets outside also. Trust me it is worth the drive if you want to see true top gear bowls and of course the GRAND DADDY of sand hills.

You are closer to Silver lake or little sahara, OK. Wynoka, OK is the closest town and they do have hotels and in some cases you can rent houses during your stay if you prefer. There is also a little known place in Colorado called North Sand Hills. True it doesn't have the highest dunes and it's only about 1800 acres of riding area, but there's just something about riding sand trails through aspen trees. on a good note, the weather is really decent in June/July (not too hot) and there's a small town (Walden) about 5 - 6 miles away to stay at and there are miles of hiking trails in that part of the area.

Although sometime next summer, I will be heading West to little sahara, UT. to do some serious dunning. In fact someone on this forum was trying to get others on here together at little sahara for some riding, possibly sometime in April or May I believe.
