atv has more ore hours than miles.
I am looking at purchasing 2 used atv's. They are both 03 Gizzly's. 1 has
564 miles w/637 hours and the other has 632 miles w/382 hours. This will be my first atv purchase. Is it a bad thing to have more hours than miles? I think I can get them both with a trailer to haul both for about 8500.00
Sound like a deal? Thanks for your input.

With more hours than miles, that one must have been a "work" quad, spending a lot of time idling while the owner was using it, or it was used for a lot of plowing/mowing, which would put a lot of hours on, but little mileage. The other sounds pretty normal, twice as many miles as hours means it was probably mostly trail ridden. As long as they are well maintained, there shouldn't be a problem, but a lot of plowing or other slow, hard work can put a lot of strain on the drivetrain/clutch/belt systems, not to mention the motor usually runs hotter when run slow and worked hard. Ask how the hours were put on the quad, and see how the maintenence records are.

One thing i ran into before from atv's having more idling/running hours then driving miles is the carb slide will get a spot wore in from the idle screw and you will have a higher chance of the throttle sticking when your driving so if you buy make sure you get that checked. if throttle gets stuck good luck trying to stop it before you crash.

Somthing else to keep in mind, If those hours are true engine running hours, then the wear and tear is still taking place to the motor. Maybe its idol time, but parts are still moving and still being worn out. Also if it is idol time...how is it going to respond to the first few rides when you make the motor do some serious work?? If you decide to buy them go through a break in process like if they were brand new bikes. Just my opinion

Actually, from what I have seen, an ATV with more engine time than miles is one that has been used for "technical" work (mine is that way). That is it was used in a very muddy area or lots of rocks and down trees. The trails around here are very off road and you seldom get up to more than 15 mph. You really need 4 wheel drive not just for looks. The majority of ATV's blast down dirt roads ay 40 mph and spend little time in 4X4situations if any at all.
I take care of my machine so this technical time doesn't hurt it. However, many people just beat the crap out of their machines doing technical stuff.
