Default Hunting ATV?

Would a 250cc 2x4 class ATV work for deer hunting? I'm looking to keep costs down and be able to pull a downed deer out of the woods. I live in hilly country and would likely buy a pre*owned machine.

Thanks

well I guess that depends on the terrain and weather. If your looking at a foot of snow on a mountain side... well that would be tough.. But if you are in warmer climate.. just about anything that would haul you would be enough to pull your kill to the road. must be nice though.. local state lands do not allow ATV's in at all. Tie and tug... and tug... and tug..

Thanks guys.

Would a 2x4 sports model work for what I need, or should I go with a utility*type/style ATV?

Never seen any thing packed out on a sport type, you need an utility for
the racks, etc.and packing gear in with you,I bought a small atv trailer from Harbor Freight
and pull it behind when I bringing out ground blinds, etc.

Default 250 2wd will do just fine

unless you're in VERY hilly terrain with snow as mentioned earlier. I have an '07 Bayou 250 and an '06 Honda Recon 250 ES that would work fine. I prefer the Recon for several reasons. You should be able to find one on your local Craigslist pretty cheap (<$2k for a newer model easily where I live). Some folks on here will tell you these ATV's are too weak, but I've be amazed at what they can do. Can't personally speak for the other brands.

Thanks Knukey, the 250cc 2wd option seems to be the way to go, so far.
I found a $2,495 1993 Honda TRX 300cc 4x4 at a shop. This is just too much for a well-used, 16-year-old machine. I don't really understand the ATV market.

Default 125cc ATV to pull deer from woods

I talked with a co-worker today and he uses a 125cc ATV to pull deer from the woods. He said it works just fine. Something to think about.

I have a Arctic Cat 250 2x4 that pulls like nobodies business. It has low gear that was made for stump pulling. Don't let what the dealer has posted on the unit scare you, go to kbb.com (kelly blue book) or nada.com and look at the "BOOK' price for the unit. Print out the page and take it with you when you go to talk turkey with the sales guy. And remember the price in the book is for a perfect unit, and no used machine is perfect. So start low and don't go over the book price. With the way the economy is they will deal with you.
