I need to put a flashlight in my trail box. What type is best? I'm concerned about weight, having enough light output, and breaking it because of vibration. I'm sure it's hard to have all 3 criteria met so what do you guys do?

For the money a Maglite is hard to beat. They have everything from single AAA battery to huge multi-D cell models. You can run over them and they won't break. My personal favorite is a 2 or 3 AA battery model. I think they come with LEDs now or are available. You can get any of the AAA or AA models for under $20.

+1 on the maglite. I have one tucked in every moving vehicle I own and around the house. Very durable light. They are made of aluminum and supposed to be water proof. And I've proved it by accidently dropping one in a mud hole and fishing for 20-30 minutes trying to find it. Still works to this day. Theres a reason most law enforcement and emergency personel carry them. Built to last. And yes they are available with LED now. Oh yah! They also have lights that can be recharged by 12volt system.

Streamlights are great too. I just can't spend that much on a flashlight. They're kind of pricy.

I have found through my years of turning wrenches that a good flashlight can save you allot of time in diagnostic repairs. I used to carry the pocket Maglight and tho a great flashlight they just don't hold up or last as long as the Stramlights. When Cornwell tools started carrying Streamlight rechargeable flashlights I was hooked and sold on there product!

For something you want to store for long periods of time, get something that runs on lithium batteries. Lithium batteries can be stored for years and not lose their charge like alkaline batteries do.

For durability, go with an LED. A lithium powered LED would be my choice.
