I would also recommend a full faced helmet like snowmobilers where. It's amazing how warm a helmet will keep your head. We were out in 18 degree weather last February up in Warren, NH and with a good jacket, thumb and hand warmers, and good gloves the cold was bearable. Half our group headed home after lunch at a local restaurant and a buddy and I continued on to Franconia, NH. We had a blast. When we got back, with night falling and a good 40mph wind blowing we were still okay. It was only when we took our helmets off to tie down the quads that we froze. And, it was almost instantaneous. Next time, helmet stays on when loading and lashing them down.
Oh, a winch, tree strap, tow straps, and a ****** block are necessities when the snow is deep off the sides of the trails. We were on packed snowmobile trails systems that allow mixed use. I moved to let a snowmobiler go by and the right front tire got caught in the soft snow and pulled the quad right off the trail. The snow off the packed trail was up above my waist. A good 4' deep! We used the winches many times that day. Still was a great ride.
