Which would be a better quad for trail riding (some what tight but not wide open), open feilds, hills, and co road cruising, is one better than the other or dose it just come down to personal preference

 

The original '04/05 TRX had suspension/engine tuned more for trail riding and is probably a better choice over the '04/5 YFZ which had a much stiffer suspension and harder hit to the motor. In '06 they somewhat switched philosophy with the Honda getting stiffer shocks and a snappier power delivery while Yamaha softened the YFZ up a bit in both areas. Properly cared for, both are great machines. Strictly going by what you are specifying, I would look for an earlier TRX, or '07+YFZ. Also I wouldn't ride any public roads unless it is legal to do so...
