Default Should I Fire my Auto Mechanic?

Hey Gang,

So I had my transmission power-flushed in my 2003 Toyota Avalon a few months ago (about 4,500 miles ago). I finally was under the hood and checked it after a nice 80 mile haul while filling my gas. Well needless to say it was overfilled. So when I got home I disconnect the return line and drained out 1 quart. At that point it was low on the stick and needed tranny fluid to bring it back up to level. So I added about 1/4 of a quart and then checked in a few days later.. it was still a little low - so I added another 1/4 quart and it was perfect!

So... my initial thought when I found it overfilled was this Mechanic is not good.... ... to fire his a$$. But then after realizing that it was only 1/2 quart too much.. I don't think it is worth firing him over. He has been pretty honest / fair prices so far to date (Only been using him 17 months)

Your thoughts?

Mechanics are only human also and subject to a few mistakes now and then.. If he's honest, been good in the past, just casually mention it to him next time in for any service. It's not like it's a couple quarts or more over full. What I'd be more concerned about is if this is the first time you've had the tranny power flushed? I've heard if you plan on doing this always do it from the first time tranny service was needed and not to ever do it on a high mileage tranny that had only the filter and oil replaced in the past.Could cause premature failure,or so I've heard.

Just a half quart over on the transmission isn't too bad. It's better than not having enough.

Had the transmission serviced on my truck, and told them to do an oil change too. Got it home and there was no oil on my dipstick. They put in 5 instead of 7 quarts. The trip home didn't kill it, but enough to fire the mechanic.

I was pretty irate and just happened to catch the owner of the shop (he has 3) and he sent a tow truck and took it to another location. Then had it towed back. No problems since then, but when it came to flushing the wife's car, I did it myself.

OldPolaris,

This car has had the tranny flushed every 30,000 since new. I dropped the pan for the first time @ 142,500 miles. It looked AWESOME! I barely got any gray residue on my finger.

I ALWAYS pop the hood and check the oil after picking up my car! The guy seen me do it once and I was like - just a quick check because 15 seconds saves me $5000! - He laughed and smiled.

I agree with you both - honest mistake. It was only overfilled for 4,500 miles. Though I will tell you that this is his 1st strike - LOL!

Nah thats an honest mistake crud I bought a brand new Nissan Pathfinder and at 3800 miles it needs a new trans thats just bad mechanics there was no mistake in them selling that, they got over on me!! I got only myself to blame though I didn't do my homework on this vehicle had I it would have been another story but a mechanic making a half qt mistake no worries just let him know you know in a nice way and things should be fine as already posted.

Normally, I'd check the oil while I was there. They were running late, which had me running late so I did it when I got home.

Knowing what they charge to flush a transmission and what it cost in cash and time to do my wife's car, I'll never take one to a shop for that again.

Your suppose to change the transmission fluid?

I have 150,000 miles, I'm late I think.
Heck I never even checked it.
