Winching

After getting stuck like that I firmly believe that winches provide a false sense of security. You look at a 2k or 3k lb winch and think it will pull out a little quad, not really when you take into account the resistance from whatever you are stuck in.
When my bud saved me we had to strap his Grizz 700 to a tree. He was pulling in reverse while using his 3k lb winch and I was on my popo trying to back out.
Moose has the answer! A winch with out a ****** block is basically useless.

Before getting stuck like that I never took your lack of winching gear jabs seriously
. Now I always bring recovery gear and have done a fair amount of research on the subject of winching techniques and tools.

So basically what everyone is saying is that if you're really stuck, a winch really won't get you out. Its just too much stress on the winch motor and your battery. A winch assists you in getting out of a tough spot, it won't bail you out if you get really buried in mud or snow.

I can imagine my winch will get me out of pretty much any situation I get myself into. Unless I break another cv shaft and simply don't have any power but it still should get me out of a moderate stuck situation. I'm not planning on sinking it in a pond or 3ft of snow. Low range, 4x4 diff-lock and probably getting off the machine to give it less weight to drag out will help the winch out too.

By itself if your really suck no the winch alone will not get you out.. This is where you need the ****** blocks and extra straps to double or triple up your line.. This doubles you pulling power. With the right equipment and use a winch will get you out of 99% of trouble

This is an example of low strain on a winch. CNCPro got high centered on a nice piece of New England Granite. Not enough traction to go forward or backward, and two guys pushing didn't get it off (aluminum skid plates and granite). I pulled him off the rock without too much strain as it was just that small bit of resistance to break.
Note: I didn't put a jacket on the line. Just noticed that. Not too bright on my part.

I have been carrying a ****** block, extra strap and a clevis or 2 for about 1 year now. Thankfully never had to use it.

I have owned another quad, also a Grizzly 660 that had a winch. I used it sparingly but it did get me out of a couple tough spots. Maybe I need to get some accessories to go with my current winch to help if I really get stuck(****** block, I do carry a tow strap with me so got that covered, I have a 2nd one I could throw under my seat too). I don't go looking for the deepest mudholes. But sometimes you can't avoid all the mud. Ironically, I haven't had the need to use my winch since I've had it.
