2004 Polaris Pred 90 not running well
#1
OK so backstory, bought a chinese atv rebuilt everything for my son, it ran GREAT!. Decided I wanted something more reliable so I bought a 2004 Predator 90. It ran really well. We took it out for the 1st time and it was really wet out. Son ran it through some pretty nasty mud and water, and me not thinking it would be an issue... Yeah wrong. It killed the stator. So I bought a new stator, put it on. And it fired right up without the choke. Took it out again last weekend, 1st time since new stator. And it fired right up and ran great, idol'ed perfect. But when he shut it off I would literally have to crank it for 30 seconds before it would start. We shut it down again, left for lunch and came back and boom starts right up again no issues. But as soon as he shut it down and we tried to start it while it was hot it would do the same thing. Crank crank crank, and then slowly start. Took the carb off had it completely cleaned and same thing. I was told there is no way to time them, which makes sense because there are only two screws on the stator no adjustment there. I had a polaris mechanic do the carb so I know that isnt the issue. Any thoughts.

If you have spark whether hot or cold, might be time to do a compression check just to eliminate that as a problem. If compression is at least 115 psi or more, could be the stator itself if you bought one of those Caltronic stators from ebay. Some of these were hit and miss as far as reliability. Ricks has stators for these that I've used in the past for people and never had a problem with them. Higher priced than the average Chinese stator, but still cheaper than the oem.

Some stators have oval holes that allow for advance/retarding...if yours does not then it's not adjustable...
It could still be electrical since it does it when hot...I'd test resistance when cold then again when hot...that is after verifying compression mentioned by OPT of course...

No timing isn't adjustable. If compression checks out check the stator specs from this manual.Ac tests(on page 99) along with resistance specs located on the wiring diagram top right hand corner.2003 manual, but all the specs for the 2 strokes were the same regardless of the year model or whether a 50 or 90cc machine.
