How do you register a Rhino (state weight limit = 1000 lbs)
#1
I just bought a new '05 Rhino.
How do you register a Rhino as an ATV? In NY, ATV's have to be less than 1000 lbs. The rhino weighs more than that, so how do I go about registering it?

According to N.Y.'s vehicle code. it doesn't meet the requirements of an atv Looks like the laws are a little behind, where atv technology is I'd talk to your dealer and see if he, has any insight on the dilemna your faced with. Your probably not the first one that has faced this problem. Or maybe, you can shave 50 lbs off of it and get it's weight certified at 999 lbs to satisfy the atv requirement.

I talked to a friend who works in the state dmv office. She said that because they weigh more than 1000 lbs. they do not register these as an atv. The atv weight used to be 700 lbs. but since many of the newer larger machines ( 500-800 cc)weigh more they changed it to 1000. Now if you can get a politician to introduce a law to change the weight limit and put up with the environmental people at the same time then you can register them. From what I understand they had a hard enough time getting the weight limit increased to 1000 lbs.
Their advise was to put a red triangle on the back of the machine, get insurance on it,wear a helmet, and carry their brochure regarding the 1000 lb weight limit. I have done all this plus added a windshield, back up light, side mirrors, and a horn. I still have not tested the legal system though. They are treated as a piece of farm equipment. Throw a bale of hay in the back, take her on down the road, and see what happens. If you get a ticket before I do let me know the outcome.

Do you have to register it as an ATV then to go off roading? I would just register it street legal then and drive on and off road...
