What exactly constitutes OHV
#1
I am considering purchase of a Yamaha Rhino primarily for hunting in Colorado and
occasional use in Southern California.
I do not have any Off road vehicles and unfortunately I am not abreast of the laws
and ordinances pertaining to there use. I am aware of green stickers and such, but that
is about it, I know they exsist!
Originaly I wanted to get a quad like the Kawasaki Prairie. I had hoped to take my brother
along on this ride. We would drive to Colorado and then use the Quad to access Jeep trails,
or just to penetrate areas where my Ford Expedition would not go. After a little research I
discovered that quads are single person use. The side by side RUV's fit the bill perfectly but
now that I have started researching them, I am not sure I will be able to use them as intended.
I am not into cross country travel and I do respect the fragile nature of the invironment, I just
want a means of accessing Jeep trails with out buying a jeep.
Does any one know of a specific link that outlines the lawfull or unlawfull use of a vehicle such as
the Rhino in Colorado. As far as I know, it has a 54 inch wide foot print and weighs 1049 lbs.
Any help in this area would be appreciated,
Thanks,

No replies on this for a few months... Here is my take:
I feel our Mule is to top heavy to take on any of the Jeep trails in Colorado. We have gone to CO for the past 10 years to ride ATV's. Due to the high center of gravity and Independent suspention, any utillity ATV will begin sticking a tire in the air. (IFS articualte like crud). I have studied how to install a solid axle on the front end of our mule.
If you plan on doing the Jeep trails out there, get a Jeep. A good used YJ or TJ can be had for about how much one of these Utillity ATV's cost.
In regards to the laws in CO. If it does not have a tag, you need to buy a permit (IIRC $15.25).
This comming saturday (july 30) we are leaving for Colorado. I am pulling my Yamaha Wolverine behind my Jeep Rubicon. Getting the best of both worlds. Hope this Helps!

Depending on how much you want to spend, the cheaper way would be to buy an older Jeep. If you are willing to spend some cash you might want to look at the Ridge Runner. www.ridgerunner.biz It is a two seat American made RTV using a Polaris 700 or 800cc EFI engine. They are located in Nampa ID and there is also a dealer in southern CA www.durkee-racing.com aka diirk. I have owned one for almost three months now and it will go where a Jeep can not. I had a Jeep years ago, CJ7, and I definitely prefer the RR over the Jeep for back country trail driving, 18" ground clearance with 13+" suspension travel with Fox racing shocks and a locked rear end.
