Rhino Ban
#1
My son has bought a Rhino and I have been considering the same, but the dealer I talked to in Utah said they legally are not allowed on the paiute trail due to their width. He also has said nobody has bothered them. Anyone heard of this or anyone have a problem. Don't want to invest in something and not be able to ride.

No additional info on this yet? My wife and I brought ours quads, Honda 250R and 300EX, to Utah a few years back and spent a wonderful 3 days on the Paiute ATV trail. We did run into rangers on the trail several times. We're thinking about buying a Rhino, so I'd love to know if we could bring it or not??

Vegas, welcome to the forum I don't know about laws in other states. I would suggest checking out what definitions they are using for legal riding vehicles on the trail. Some states use weight, others use width. With the birth of the rhino and the likes of it there seems to be some clarification needed on where they can and can't ride.

I've been searching for info on this, and can't find anything on type of vehicle rules. Utah doesn't even require adult ATV riders to wear helmets I remember questioning an unhelmeted ranger on the trail there about not wearing a helmet, and he sheepishly admited that he recommends them and that he really ought to wear one. I just can't imagine anyone offroading without a helmet on. In a Jeep, buggy, or Rhino-type vehicle you're protected by the cages, so of course then a helmet wouldn't be needed, but still not a horrible idea IMO.

I ride on the Paiute Trail all the time, but have not taken our Rhino there yet so I don't know if the rangers would give you a hard time or not. I have taken our Rhino on the Duck Creek Trail System just east of Cedar City a few times though, and it fits through the ATV gates and I have not been bothered yet.
On the helmet issue ...
After logging about a thousand miles worth of ATV riding on the Paiute Trail in the last five years I can say that I only rarely see a utility ATV rider wearing a helmet. Seriously, I'm betting one out of fifty riders wears a helmet. But when I go dirt bike riding on the desert race courses around the state on non-race weekends I have never once seen a dirt bike rider not wearing a helmet. Kind of interesting to see the different emphasis that the two sports place on safety and training. Dirt bikes have no training courses, yet essentially everyone appears very safety minded. ATVs have training courses and numerous laws pertaining to young riders, but essentially no utility ATV riders I see have helmets on. I haven't figured that one out yet, but I always wear my helmet, even in the Rhino. If you think the rollbar on a Rhino is going to protect your head then you are just waiting to bust your head (on the rollbar) in a rollover.

Hi: I'm waiting delivery on a Ranger XP 700EFI,Deluxe cab,Metal Roof,Roll bar cage,Soft doors.
This vehicle has every safety6 feature I can think of, which I ordered....Rear Bumper,Front Brush Guards/extensions/headlight guards/nerf bars/dual wipers/in-cab heat with blower/front and rear recievers for the winch, etc.
My handicapped stepson (Mentally Impaired, 20 years old going on 5,with Cystic Fibrosis),who has a small quad and smowmobile...and just put-puts around (5MPH max)...will Always be with an adult in the Ranger.
I need to get him a "Safety pole" ...the fiberglass pole with bright flag.
I'm wondering about a helmet. He always uses his safety belts, and insists that others also buckle up. Do you think the trade-off in hearing and vision justify a slow, careful driver with an adult passenger?
I appreciate your response(s).

Thanks, Doctor! Recreational Utility Vehicle (RUV).Has a nice ring to it.
Are there any specific brands and/or styles of helmets you reccomend?
There's the full-face helmet, the "Football-style" helmet, and the "Cap Style" helmet that's leather up to the "Moe of the 3 stooges" hairline.
I'm really serious about this: I want him protected as much as possible. I do worry a bit about vision restrictions, and hearing restrictions.
Thanks.
