I just got a '86 250R today. We have a motocross track out near our house. The guy that owns it works on quads and sales them.I saw it out there last week and wanted it.It has a Paul Turner pipe steel nerf bars and fast treker tires.Which I am replacing because the tires are bald and the nerfs are ugly looking and the pipe is real old. I haven't got to ride it because when he bought it the axle bearings where worn out.He cranked it and hesaid it sounded great. And I have orderd a FMF pipe and silencer. I got it for $3000. And I trust the guy I bought it from because mostofhis work is on Banshee's and 250R's and he works on my 300EX. I was wondering what I schould I pay attention to such as engine wise.Such as reeds, gaskets, bearings, and the piston and everthing else. What reeds schould I use I am just trail ridding for now.I will keep yall informed when it is fixed.

congrats man I also have a 86 model 250r and love it. U will love the FMF pipe and silencer. I have boyeson reeds but am going to get a RAM valve. if U are going to race it get some +2 +1 a-arms and some kind of aftermarket shock and have the rear revalved. U don't need to get a new swing arm because the 88-89 250r's had the shorter swingarm than the 86-87. also GET A CASE SAVER it is a must I broke my case and it was a very costly mistake. I have a nac's casesaver and it looks and works great. Um also I have 20/11/9 6 ply razr's on ITP .190 wheels and I love them they really hook up and slide great. I also have 18/11/8 holeshot mx's on mitchell .190 wheels and I love them they always have flats though. I also have wider off set ITP .190 wheels and this helps alot. as soon as I sell my warrior I am getting new leager +2 +1 a-arms works triple rate shocks with adjustable res's. and a durablue +2 axle

86 trx250r wiseco +0.20 piston,boyeson reeds,FMF gold series fatty pipe,power core 2 silencer,DG alloy series nerfs,nac's case saver,motion pro twist throttle,pro design kill switch,uni filter,152 main jet,removed head light,factory kill switch,tail light,tool box,20/11/9 6 ply razr's on ITP .190 wheels,21/7/10 holeshots on ITP .190 wide off set wheels,18/11/8 holeshot mx's on mitchell .190 wheels,future mods include leagers +2 +1 a-arms,works triple rates with adjustable res's,durablue axle and much ,much more.

Just a comment on your choice of reed cages. The FMF RAM valve provides virtually no performance gain. A Boyesen RAD valve would be a better choice, and a V-force Delta cage would be better yet. Do a search in the Performance Mods category on reeds and you'll see some good discussion on the different brands.
