400EX... what is inside the rear tires???
#1
While trying on a new pair of rear tires, I noticed something rattling inside one original rear rim/tire. I was even more surprised when the other rear tire did the same thing. Does anybody know what Honda puts inside the rear tires?... and what does it do?

Had the same problem on the fronts of my 400ex. I asked the tire guy manager at a major tire place who is also into quads. They are little pieces of round brown rubberand their purpose according to him are to balance the tire out at speed because they go to the lightest part of the spinning tire (balancing) I immediately told him he is full of %#$@%

Chances are it is indeed rocks and/or other debris. I have had this happen on numerous sets of tires. Stuff can get in between the tire and the wheel when you plow hard into corners and over time will eventually work its way into the middle of the tire.
Watch when you have the tires taken off the rims and I bet you'll see all kinds of crap in there - dirt, grass, rocks, etc.

Dennis

HAHAHAHAHAHHA.You guys are killing.moisture beads? Please, what to keep the tire fresh?Rocks? You would have gotten a flat if rock broke through bead. Not to rag but come on guys. You're killing me here. When a tire is made the inside is left fairly rough(unfinished)for no reason other than it is not necessary to clean up.Small scraps of excess rubber are in and on inner surface(similar to whiskers on outside of new tire but not as clean)plus excess trimmings during manufactureing process. As the tire spins when used these scraps get tumbled around(like clothes in a dryer)and end up in a nice round ball. They will vary in size from a BB to a jaw breaker depending on manufacturer process and whether or not tire mounter bothered to clean out tire prior to mounting.Hope this helps with the quest for greater knowledge of the little things that drive us crazzzzzzzy.
