get the 250R. if you maintence it proporly you wont have to work on it as much, and the 250 will leave the 400 in a race

The 250r is quicker and fun to flick around, but the 400ex has it good points as well. I think that it is all riders preference on which machine to get. Like dragracer789 says if you take care of the 250r it will be a good dependable ride. One of our boys rides a 400Ex and one a 250R they both like them for their style of riding. The 250r requires a little more rider ability to go faster than the 400ex because of the different powerband, but that is part of the fun of having a 2 stroke. The one boy that has his R wouldn't part with it, but the the other son likes his 400ex very much as well. In the woods both machines are very equal and in my opinion the outcome there would depend on the riders abilities. It is a little harder to find a nice 250R, but they are still out there. I hope this helped.

As much as I love 4 strokes, I have both the 400ex and the 250r. My 250r doesnt give me much problems because i maintain it well. I like the 250r. i fyou want to ride it fast you should learn on a slower quad first they can be qit dangerous. Go for the 250R

I ride a 00 Yamaha Mod Banshee. But if I could find a 88-89 250R I would buy it.
So I would go with the 250R.

Get the z400 why would you get the ex? Z400 is definantly the way to go if you want a four stroke with good top end. Its obvious Honda is behind in quads these days. Definantly go with the Z. Good Luck Shopping
