dzzy: it's a 2 stroke. I think it would be points because of its age. but I'll find out. How do I check this flywheel key? where is the flywheel on this thing?

matthewnkaty: I assume you knew the button was orange because your parents probably gave you one a couple of years ago when you turned 5. Maybe when you grow up they'll get you something bigger than 50cc [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]*

 

The flywheel will be on usually (but not always) the left side of crankshaft. The crank taper that holds the flywheel has a groove machined into it and a woodruff or sometimes called half moon key fits into a slot in the flywheel for exact positioning, as this determines timing, whether it's points that open and close via a cam mounted on the inside of the flywheel, or a protrusion on the outside that trigger a small coil (trigger coil). If the key shears, the flywheel can spin on the crank and throw your timing way off. You can determine if this is so either by the method I described earlier, or you can acquire a flywheel puller, remove the flywheel and visually inspect it. Hope that helps.

 

Good call Dizzy, I forgot all about that. If you have spark, gas and compression that pretty much should do it. If you have a helper and can't find a fly wheel puller. Have someone hold the spark plug to ground and put a finger over the sparkplug hole and try to start it the spark of course should happen just before TDC or when your finger is being forced off the hole.
