I didn't realize the thornbirds don't come in 44's, but it wasn't the point. I don't have any tires for sale, I was just being sarcastic. I appreciate the fact you would pull me out. lol Sounds like you have a nice toy, I have a 98' Tacoma Trd w/TRD s/c. 33" tires on 12" wheels. I modified the diff. lock so now I have push button detroit locker. I don't do much off roading but it sure has alot of power now. I like to listen to the s/c whine.

Nahh. I got the six. I haven't had any problems yet...I also heard toyota had a problem with the oil gelling up in the motor. Haven't had that problem yet either. The only head gaskets I've heard of were the 92' - 95' ( I think those are the right years) Toyota had a recal on them. No fight here just giving you a hard time about the rather large tires you have on your atv. lol

Actualy i owned a 03 rancher right before i got my foreman. The foreman has around 2 inches more clearence than the rancher and the big bear. I have measured them all and i am still yet to find where my friends big bear mesures 9.9 and i am also yet to find where my foreman measures 7.7 Big bears are by no means faster then the foreman or rancher. Aactualy stock for stock on flat ground no hills when the rancher hits top speed it will pull away from both the foreman 450 and the big bear 400.

>Out here in southern california, I bought both my big bear and rancher es 4x4's for 3999!

Big4x4: Where did you get your ATV? I'm in N. California, but could easily travel south (or to a neighboring state) for a better price...
Thanks much!

vampireforeman, the little plastic piece is messed up. I knew it would happen but when that truck pulled me out of the pond the chain ripped the sides of the plastic a little. Pushing a bike out hurts the plastic less than most other stuff cause it doesn't always hit the back rack on the other bike.

Foreman es 450, How does that 450 hang with a grizz until upper 60's, I haven't found a 450 that hangs puth the rubi and I can't hang with a grizz. It starts pulling away from me just a little faster than I will pull away from a 450. The 450 tops out about 50-54 mph, I have heard of one hitting 55 down hill of coarse. The 450 is not the best bike made by honda, but it may be the best bike for you. I can do anything a 450 can do with the exeption of two wheeldrive powerslides but I can do that in 4wheel drive. My friend was offered a new rinny for $5700 by a dealer the other day cause one of my other friends was going to get one and then didn't so the guy said he was just helping the warehouses get rid of them. The same salesman wouldn't come down past $5600 on a 4x4 manual Vinson though.

The place I bought my Rancher from was called LA Cycles. They were very easy to deal with, and was in and out in 30 minutes. I bought my big bear from a place called Marina Yamaha. They were also decent to deal with. I am not sure if they still have these sales though..........

My wife and I gave the Big Bear a hard look when we were buying (about a year ago0, and looked at, researched, and pondered exactly the three machines you are considering. Since our riding is lots of relatively high-speed (18-25 mph, <g&gt hardpack, plenty of steep trails with lots of loose sand & rocks, light slick-loose-mud, and slick-rock stream crossings, we wanted comfort, speed capability, and traction. For my machine we wanted to be able to haul everything we wanted for weekend camping trips 'waaaaaay out there (up to 75 mi. into the mountains, on USFS roads & trails, back out on Sunday); the remote location of our rides meant we also wanted rock-solid reliability. Gumbo mud is not a North Idaho problem (or at least not like my native South Louisiana!).

I got the Foreman. Rides like a truck. Rides like a truck. Rides like a truck. Never gets stuck, pulls stumps, buildings, hills you wouldn't walk up. Pulls my Otter Express trailer with much camping gear. Doesn't even work hard doing any of that.
Oh -- did I mention it Rides like a truck ??

It was a close call between the Rancher and the Big Bear. 'Round here, arguably the most ATV'd state in the lower 48, Hondas and Yamahas are generally considered the two most reliable brands. Others have more "features", more speed, more latest-this and latest-that --- and those features are all totally cool, and are things I'd want on my Hondas, but not at the price of what I'd have to give up: simplicity, reliability, work-til-they-drop.

Rode the Rancher & Big Bear. For us: Rancher.
The little (not really) sucker is a sports car. Maybe not a Porsche, but a solid-axle sports car like maybe a Morgan, or (ohyez) an AC Cobra...
I've driven a lot of wonderful-handling vehicles in my time, including motorcycles and quite a range of sports cars, and the stock 350ES Rancher with stock tires is simply one of the best-handling machines I've ever driven.

You don't need a 424-select unlocker to power slide that little jewel: just pick the right gear, throw it into a corner, and 4-wheel-drift your way through it. Somehow, among all that "tradition" and "outdated design" Honda got it right on the Rancher. It's hard to high-center, "sticks" in climbing situations, and runs like a bat out of hell everywhere else. I dunno -- balance, center of gravity, rider position -- they just got it right.

The Yamaha was nice. I liked it. If I were into slower, technically tough stuff, mud bogs, tree climbs, whatever, I'd probably have bought a couple of Big Bears.

Many times, particularly on shorter ride-days where we aren't going to far and don't carry much gear, I wish we'd gotten two Ranchers and left my Foreman (the one that Rides like a truck) with the dealer. (But when you need a truck, you need a truck, as I often do in the hinterlands.) My wife is a pretty good rider, and on that Rancher she can simply ride off and leave me and my Rides-like-a-truck-Foreman in any contest more difficult than a straight drag race. (Hey, that Truck has low-end torque to die for!!) And the Rancher is simply FUN.

I dunno where Honda got its name, but that Rancher isn't patterened on somebody's 12 yr. old Farmall -- it's more of a wild mustang, last seen in that cloud of dust over the fourth ridge ahead of . . . anybody's Big Bear, and my Super-Truck Foreman.

Like I said -- depends on what kid of riding you're doing.
But if you'll be doing more "riding and looking" than you will be contesting with your buddies over who can get the worst stuck and still make it out, well, don't let that "little" 329 cc Rancher fool you into thinking it's too small, too dainty.

Plus there's a ton of aftermarket stuff out there for Ranchers, from drivetrain & suspension stuff, to boxes and gun racks and whatever.
I must say, in all of my research on what I NEED in my next quad, you posted some of the best info I could ask for.......I was jumping between the three of these, thinking that I needed to go big with the Foreman to be happy. I plan to use it for a weekend trail cruiser that may haul stuff on the racks like a chainsaw or something occaisionally. Sounds like the Rancher is for me. Sporty enough to get me through rough woods exploring without feeling like I'm on a jeep w/ handlebars.......The way I feel on a grizzly.

Think my size 6'2"@250lbs would be too big for the Rancher?
