question on wiring harness

i just picked up my first quad. It is a 1989 honda with electric start. When you place a screwdriver across the solenoid, the electric start works. There is a problem with the switch because when you depress it, nothing happens.
Before I replace the switch, I checked the wiring. There is a yellow/red wire that goes to the solenoid and a black wire. The black wire is the problem because it just ends with a plug about 1 foot down the wiring harness.
My question is: is the black wire a ground wire or a power wire? It seems to me that the no wires just end, it has to hook up to something. Black is usually ground but is it normal for one of the two wires connected to a starter switch to be a ground wire?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
