416 kit for 400EX??????
#1
I need more power. I have jetted and put K&N with T-4 exhaust. I want to bore it out but I still want reliability. Do you guys think the 416 is the way to go? And what other mods will i have to go with if I choose this route. Will i need to go with a bigger Card? My intent is more top end and keep the torque. Thanks for your assistance.

I had a 416 kit installed last winter. I put in a 10.8-1 JE piston. Hotcams Stage II cam, heavy duty valve springs, heavy duty clutch springs, and a heavy duty cam chain. I also run a Yoshimura slip on pipe.
The builder informed me that the HD valve springs were not a necessity, but he recomended them as cheap insurance. He did say, however, that the HD clutch springs, and the HD timing chain were the only way to go with this kit. I'm sure if you asked ten different mechanics, you'd get eight different opinions on that subject. As cheap as they were, I couldn't find a reason not to have them installed.
I have been extremely satisfied with the results. The quad has tons more power throughout the powerband.
As far as a larger carb goes, you can send the stocker to Sparks to be bored to a 38mm, which is what I am doing now.

just had the 416 stroked to 440 and it worked good, didn't do the cam or carb, but it runs with raptors and ds's might have won more but the rider was to light and couldn't keep the tires on the ground thru the whoops. will be doing the cam and carb soon, so it should be a really go
