Ogre is correct. Try warming up your engine then check it. I did the same thing, checked the oil in a cold engine...then added some. Once my engine was warm I checked it again and had way to much oil in it.

Ogre,
thanks for the info.. haven't tried it yet, but any help is appreciated..
Another question, has anybody else noticed how freakin hard it is to change the sparkplug on this thing...
He bought it used, and the factory owners manual and the little Honda toolkit wasn't included... There seems to be VERY little clearance on one side for a sparkplug socket to clear the head casting...
We ended up buying an "El-Cheapo" socket from the bargain bin at the local parts store and grinding most of the sidewall out of it....
Again, thanks for the info.. I'll let ya'll know what happens..

We had a 1999 400EX in our shop that did smoke, and needed new valve seals.

I rode mine a week ago, let it set for awhile and then checked the oil and there was nothing on the dipstick. I immediately loaded it back on the trailer. It was time for an oil change, and I didn't have time, so I took it to the dealer. I asked them the exact same question and he said something like there was a pump between the engine and the dry sump and if that happened you needed to start it and let it run for a couple of minutes and it then check the oil. We did that and the oil was ok. You probably have too much in it now. I know exactly what you feel like when you check the dipstick 3 times and still no oil. Kinda makes you sick. Good luck

Ya know... If this is THAT common, You'd think Honda would place a small sticker on the oil reservior close to the dipstick stating the proper procedure for checking the oil.
Many people buy used bikes, and i've never known anybody (other than first time riders.. who don't typically buy a 400EX for a first quad) to actually sit down and read the owners/service manual before riding...
On my Polarises, all they require is that you screw in the dipstick to check it, and thats embossed on the dipstick itself...
