The next easiest is to get the spare if you know where it is. If you can't find it then if you wrote the number in the owner's manual order a new one. Then you can try to find the original. Yes, you can hot wire an atv, but I wouldn't do it any one can hop on and go for a ride.

You could also remove the ignition lock & take it to a lock smith where he could make a new key to fit.
Your friend could the bill his friend (?) for the expense. With a friend like that he surely needs no enemies.

Look in the Polaris section. There is a question just like this with a lot of different ideas.

I lost the key on my 97 Honda 300EX (that I no longer own)
I didn't want to buy a new key so I pulled the red and black wire out of the wiring harness (that goes to the key switch) When I wanted to start it, I would just plug those two together, and hit the starter switch...
I ran it for over a year like that with no ill effects....
I have looked at the Polaris system, but it is more complicated..... So I have attached small chains to each key and secured them to the handlebars.... But I NEVER remove the keys anyway....
Good Luck...

As they say a little late to close the gate but i have a suggestion get one of those glow in the dark key chains that companys give out., and tape a extra key under the seat or some where you feel comfortable having ti. Also on the new hondas i think there is alittle more than just touching two wires together. I could be wrong anyways good luck.

Yes it's true, just pull the black and red wire, the only two wires that have male and female ends from the key switch and connect them. I lost my key on my 93 300ex and I did this for a few years. Then before I got rid of it, my starter started giving me alot of problems so I used a flathead and I would touch the red wire from the starter and a piece of metal with the flathead and spark, spark boom it would fire up. I would think this could be dangerous so don't do it unless you have no other choice.

I can't help with the hot wire but when you get a new key, put a bright soft boat type key chain on it and it will be real hard to lose. I learned that lesson the hard way in the wilderness of Maine.
