Need help/suggestions with 250x
#1
I just bought a 1987 250x-it was running, but it smoked and was rattling-the previous owner said the top end needed to be rebuilt. After getting it home i was riding around a little and it stalled-I havent been able to get it started up again.
Just to let you know, i have had little/no experience with this kind of stuff and need lots of pointers/tips.
I dont know if i should just go ahead and rebuild the top end-I would hate to do this and then find out that the rest of the engine is shot-how do i know whether the rest of the engine(the bottom end?) is ok? Does anyone suggest getting a used 250x/350x engine and using that instead?
If I were to rebuild the top end, would I be able to do it-is it that hard? Would I need to get the cylinder bored out?
Thanks to all who can help

I've never rebuilt an engine myself before .. if you had the shop manual for it you could probably tackle it on your own if you are mechanically inclined. But you really need two things to do that with:
1. The tools, torque wrench being probably the most important of the lot.
2. Somewhere relatively clean to do the work. Outside on a windy day will deposit a lot of dust into your work .. that's not good.
If you don't have all of the tools for doing the honing (smoothing) and stuff like that, you could probably take the parts to a garage and have them do it for you, then take the finished parts and bring them back home .. and install them.
My adivse would be to take it somewhere.
