Hey guys, I have a question. I am currently thinking of buying a 400ex. The quad I ride now is a 87 250r with pipe, reeds. My question is do you think it will be a let down going from my modded r to the ex. I will modd the ex when i get it. I will put on a pipe, rejet, and filter, and a rev box. Will these modds make the ex fly or what?

well i hate to say it but the mods you listed will not make it fly. to make it fly you need the parts you listed + bored, high comp piston, cam,
port job. then you will fly, will beat stock 250r's (don't know about modified 250r's) and stock banshee's!!!!!!

99 426ex,11:1,web cam,port job,rev box,k/n,dyno jet kit,6 air box vents,ids-2 super trapp pipe,
= lots of kick *** power

In my opinion, at first, the stock 400ex will be a let-down compared to your slightly modded 250R. When you get a pipe, filter, the correct jetting with no airbox lid (or one with doles drilled), and a rev box, it should be able to run with your "R", except for maaaaabbbbeee very top end. This is all considering that your "R" is in good mechanical order. Just my two cents!

Thats cool. Well it sounds like the 400 is a good bike. To tell you the truth, top end really doesn't matter to me, 90% of the time i don't go over 4th gear. It sounds like you guys like your 400's a lot. Any other tricks you know of to make the ex better? Oh yeah, if you got pics of your quads, lets see them. I think the 400ex is the best looking quad out there.

Yes, it will be a let down. I have 88 250 R with similar mods and my 400 doesn'have the performance/handling like the 250 does. I feel the 400 lacks low end grunt and it does't handle as well as the 250. One of my riding buddies has spent 4500.00 +/- (440 kit, shocks, lowering strut) on his 400 in an effort to duplicate a 250, it's close, but still not a 250.
If you want something that you can run thru the woods with, is reasonably fast but you can poke along with the wife on slower trails the 400 will work for you just fine. However, if you think your gonna run your buddies down on their 250's it ain't gonna happen (unless your Gary Denton)
Really, what we are doing is comparing apples to oranges, each has their good points/ bad points, thats why I have both.
Just my opinion
