Blew up my 400EX, Lookin for possible reasons why
#1
First ride on 01 400ex, Rode it this weekend and I think I sucked water into the airbox. No prob there, but had the drain plug in and it eventually got sucked through the motor and into the tranny. Tranny acted wierd, wouldnt shift right. Got it into second and now it is stuck there. Anyone have any thoughts on what the problem could be?

What???!! water in the engine is great for it, really cleans things out. It's that dang oil you gotta watch out for. No really though that's the first I've heard of tranny problems with an ex. Keep us posted.

Boy, sounds to me like you better go back to the guy you bought this thing from and ask him what he did to it before you had it....I do not believe that this could be a naturally occuring thing. They make these things to NOT do things like that.

water is not good for the engine. belive me ive rebuilt 3 or 4 motors b4. iam 13, you are gonna think iam some stuiped kid but iam not.
water dosent compres like gas and oil does. if water is in your tranny then it might of washed all of the lube of and seized the tranny. did the motor cut out or feel like their was a slug of water in the gas when you rode it ?

Uh...what? I was joking about the water being good. I think Kyperman has the right idea. I had my old 400ex sucking saltwater for hours on one occasion. It dried up and all was good again. I think the most likely culprit is the person you bought it off of not changing the oil. You'll now if the oil wasn't changed regularly if you take the head off and the oil is gummy. Just dipp a finger in it and if the oil strings from your finger, then it was probably never changed. And if it was changed, then it was done very rarely. Good luck,

Oh yeah, oil and gas don't compress either.

no, it didnt lock up, it just wouldnt shift gears. Wouldnt go into second at all. Then it went into second and wouldnt come back out. now it will not shift at all and is stuck in second gear. They guy I got it from took care of it really well. He actually apologized to me cause he only had the chance to wax the frame 3 times. This bike was immaculate. I believe he took care of it. I did e-mail him to ask him if there were any tranny problems before he got off it.
