The stock Z lacks low end power, which is where you need it for trail riding. I put on a K&N, FMF PowerBomb, and Ti-4. Really woke the low end up!! Handling is superb.

Thbe EX is a great woods machine too, but the Z will make a better all around ride.

I would go with the Z for trail riding, it's a great trail machine, i'm not bias or anything. If however you do go with a Z, buy a gusset kit from lonestar for the frame, or else you will have a broken frame and Suzuki will laugh at you when you ask for a new frame.

I am a Honda guy and I would still buy the Z400 for the simple fact that it has reverse. It is a nice machine but the reverse just makes it that much more appealing for trail riding.

I have 2 400ex's in my garage. Neither one has reverse. I hope that helps answer your question.

id go with a z, however, the 04 ex's are supposedly making more power than the z due to the bigger carb, but really, it depends on weather or not you need reverse or like one color better than the other

I own both and a 400ex is lighter. A Z400 is an updated liquid cooled, faster, reverse having 400ex .The only reason to buy a 400ex would be price.
Don't worry about the frames, my 400ex has cracked frame and the z does not, go figure
