Case protector?

I got into a nasty bog yesterday and I ripped the protective plate off of my 230 quadsport. I have a 250X motor in the frame and when I was trying to get out of the rest of the bog the chain decided it didn't want to stay on the sprocket. Under high RPM's it went into the front case and bound up causing A nice long crack. I am working on getting it welded up until I track down a new one but I don't want this to happen again.
I went to a smaller sprocket so I was wondering if someone makes a case guard or maybe I could build something out of metal or very hard plastic to take up the space between the case and the chain/sprocket? My theory is that is the chain can't come out of the front teeth then it can't bind between the case and sprocket. Am I right or wrong?
