hey, on tuesday, i went through tonds of deep water and mud puddles with my 250r. wednesday i'm riding at my field and it quits. i change the spark plug, it will fire up almost everytime, but won't keep going if I don't keep giving it throttle. just starts and quits. anyone have an idea of what the problem might be? I'm thinking the carburetor needs to be cleaned/cleared out. the pilot jet may have been effected by the mud and water. sound right? think all it needs is come carb cleaner? Thanks, any response is greatly appreciated, and needed.

I opened the air filter enough to get into the carburetor, sprayed "gum-out" in there, then poured some "sea foam" in the fuel tank then ran it for a good amount of time. I don't really notice a difference, and don't know if I should yet, but it still won't idle on its own. Am I going to have to take the carburetor out and clean it myself? It would work with a little bit of throttle, but the throttle adjuster didn't do anything either. Thanks

You will have to take the bowl off the bottom of the carb to clean it the right way. Remove the jets and take a small piece of copper wire and clean the insideof the jets and all the small holes. Good Luck It sound like the carb

I was just reading a Dirt Bike magazine article on carbs. They say that "'carb problems' might not be the carb. Hard starting, poor throttle response at high or low revs, plug fouling and poor idle control are more often fuel, fuel supply or engine problems." I'm no expert, but maybe riding through water and mud contaminated your fuel. You carb is 13 years old, so maybe it is the carb.

This article also said not to use wire because it could actually damage the carb internals by enlarging holes for jets. "If holes are enlarged, jetting will change which could cause additional problems."

It's possible that your pitcock on your tank has some shrapenal in it slowing down the fuel? but its probably the main jet in your carb. unscrew it from the carb and use a piece of wire from a wire brush! Don't leave it on the carb and try to jam a coathanger through it!! Now that will mess up your jetting!!!!!!!!!!

Does it have a idle adjustment screw?? that might be the problem, im not familiar with two-stroke carbs, but my 250X had the same problem and it ran fine once i adjusted the idle screw.
