here we go again...in my opinion the 400ex is better for the listed categories, stock for stock the z is about 2-3mph faster but costs about $400-500 more, with the money u save on a ex u can pipe it and be just as fast if not faster. The z has had problems with frames breaking i dont kno if this has been fixed or not. The ex is superior in the reliability department and has ALOT of aftermarket parts for it. I think the 400ex handles better because its lighter and feels wide unlike the tall narrow feel you get on the z. Jumping theyre both about the same (until the frame on the z breaks) and once again speed they can be equal if the ex is piped. A good pipe, proper jetting, and k&n filter and youll blow a z away (well not blow away but beat it by atleast 3-4bikes). Going into heavy mods you can get the z to get more hp because of the liquid cooling and DOHC engine but i have heard that once you heavliy mod a z it loses alot of reliability. anything else?

HOLD ON...lol...EX lighter?...nutuh...WRONG! and second of all theyre the same exact price. 5,699...and around here you can get the Z cheaper than the EX. Z, tall and narrow. First off the Z is barely an inch taller at the seat and the EX isnt wider. Its obvious that your brand loyal to Honda. Ride both quads for a day and you'll find out that the handling is almost exactly the same and its a lot easier to most around on the seat with a Z. As far as aftermarket parts goes well there are just as many for the Z. As far as heavy mods go..well i think you'll be a lot better off with a heavily modded liquid cooled dohc than an air cooled sohc. Both honda and yamaha lie about thier quads weights. but even the statistics say that the Z is lighter and thats with reverse. If you wanna pick a honda quad thats better than a Z then stick with the one above your name.

Oh and its the upper shock mounts not the whole frame and it was fixed on the late 03 models, and suzuki will fix it.

I own them both. THE ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! The Z is a 400EX with a number of small improvements, and the engine is a LARGE improvement!

wrong.... the z400is lighter dry weight but wet the ex is lighter, but i would go with a Z400 over the 400ex, mainly because of reverse, and liquid cooling

arent they same dry weight?375? and then add fluids and the z is heavier. around here the z costs more even used! The z does feel tall and narrow compared to the ex, it feels like a raptor u look down at the fenders and feel cramped and unsure about turning IMO<-----O. And reverse??? its a sport quad need i say more?

The 400ex may be slower but its a lot cheaper now even if the msrp for both is the same. The dealers around here are marking the ex's down like crazy. If you mod the ex well it will beat the Z. If you mod the Z it will beat the ex, so just get whichever one you like more. With the money you save buying the ex over the Z you could mod it to be just as or close to as fast.
