Does the 400ex too much power for me?
#1
I am going to get a 400ex within the next year, but my dad's friends keep telling him that "the 400ex is too much bike, and that it is for experts only". I don't think I would have a huge problem with the power because I have a dirtbike that makes 18hp stock, and it as tons of mods (see signature) but weighs 150lbs less! I really think 28hp in a 377lb atv would NOT!!! be too much for me. What does everyone else think?

Q: Is the 400EX too much machine for you?
Yes - If you're an idiot.
No - If you're not an idiot.
The machine is as safe as you ride it. Do something dumb or beyond your means, be ready to take the consequences.
It sounds like you have had experience with off-roading and probably are aware of the precautions that need to be taken. Your weight, strength, and brain all tweaked together will have a great factor in your abilities. Like I said before, "Do something dumb or beyond your means, be ready to take the consequences."

a stock 400ex is not as fast or power full, as much as people brag them up. when i bought mine
i was very disapointed in the lack of power it had, but now it hauls!!!
99 426ex,11:1,web cam,port job,rev box,k/n,dyno jet kit,ids-2 super trapp pipe,6 air box vents,
14 tooth front sprocket= lots of power

I think it has great power.
It doesn't have as much as a modified 250R, but a stock one, it hangs with pretty well.
Motor power aside, you will need to be prepared for what a bike to quad transition will be like.
-It is twice the weight. Your strength will need to be used at the right time. Your body english is still important however, it won't have quite the same effect as the bike.
-You have 4 wheels. Not to be smart, but you now have a much wider contact patch to deal with. When jumping, you need to have a wide level take off, not like a bike where 3 inches will do.
-You will have to understand that it's way more round. So if you fall off it, it won't just lay down, it will either roll away or roll at you.
All things aside, if you get a new bike, just be careful. It can really hurt you if you aren't wise. It has great suspension so it tends to make some riders overconfident. But, it is the best choice for a sport machine today, and you will either grow into it, or become accustomed.
Get it, you won't regret it.

I think you should have read over what i wrote one more time...
Just by looking at my signature you should be able to tell that I ALREADY have an ATV. It is a 1999 Honda Recon 250. I already have a year and a half of experience on it and i know what atv ride like. I have been riding four-wheeled vehicles longer that 2. Just so you know...
