350 fourtrax question

Well it really isn't too bad. My buddy bought his in mint condition for 1200 with a plow and that is CAD too!!! I has been a great bike but when he got it it wouldn't run. The carb had been screwed up for so long that the flooding caused the valves to carbon up and stick. The piston came up and tagged the stuck valve and bent it. We took it all apart and put a new valve in the head and all new valve seals. A honda gasket is the only way to go. After that he slapped a carb kit in and it works like a clock now. I think they are well work spending some money on. It is very hard to find I used head from where I am. Good luck.

I would hate to see you have it give up the ghost with a stuck valve out miles from no where.....could be a bit of a b*tch to push back. Or tow for that matter.
I don't know how easy it is to remove your head with the engine in frame.....mine was pretty bad, but it was in a 250X and whoever did the original conversion did not get the engine centered and I had to completely dismount the engine from the frame to get the head off. In a factory frame it will probably pull off pretty easily. Just make sure you wire up the timing chain so it doesn't fall back into the case if you decide to do it. Maybe just need to ream the guides and lap the valves, and of course check everything else while you are there. To pay for it to be done, I cannot imagine much more than $300.00 for parts and labor if there is no major cam failure(probably not if it is still running)Not sure what a new head assembly would cost, but I would expect at least double that.
Even with the valve cover removed you may see what is causing the problem......look for a broken spring, and look at the cam sleeves (bearings). Push on the valves and see if they hang up at all, they should snap pack easily. Try to twist the tappets on the shaft, they should not feel like they can rock side to side. If you don't feel up to doing the work yourself, take it to the local mechanic who set your valves if he is qualified......it's not really too difficult or expensive to fix (the head) but well worth the security if you are headed out into the woods.

So here's the verdict, the guy before me ran it without oil it he top end long enough to cause the cam, lobes and the rockers major wear, and the journals have to be all machined. I'm pretty pissed..with a few days before hunting it will be a miracle if i get this thing together before that.

Try "Quad Pro" which is in Montreal Canada......I have found they have a decent supply of 350X motor parts(at least last year when I needed them), and are decently priced (not the cheapest, but not the most expensive) and got stuff next day from them when I needed it. I bought a valve cover for one of mine, which still had good journals in it, and good rocker arms for $75.00 - you may be able to get everything if the lower journals are not worn through to the head . Then all you would need is to replace the journals and cam....They have a whole head assembly, but they want $550.00 for it . Ph. 866 565 6686, or 450 565 6686

Well... the head cant be machined. And I can't find used head anywhere, i think i'm going with a new head, cam and rockers. Pretty costly but the thing will be brand new from the ground up when i'm done.
