How good is the Rubicon compared to the 450?

The rubicon's seem to be alright, little more power and the automatic seems to be the best choice of autos out there. I have a 450s and have had little trouble with it.
If you do get the rubi, get a warn 424 shifter. It allows you to choose between 2 & 4wd. This is a standard offering on the 450's.

The 450ES is a much better machine than the Rubicon IMO. It is lighter, has WAY less electronics, and really, how much transmission do you need? Having 3 driving modes on top of a hi/low range is ridiculous to me. The rubicon has a little higher top speed but I can live without that. The stock 2wd/4wd selector on the 450 is also nice. Anything that substitutes as a partially submerged boat sometimes should be as simple as possible. If you have to choose between the 450 and 500, I would take the 450 if I were in your position.

Well, I just bought a rubicon a month ago... I really like the automatic, but feel it could use the ability to go between two and four wheel drive. Actually, I got a deal I could not refuse on a new one... so the decision was pretty easy. I have heard teh belt drives have problems with they get wet, but can't say for sure since I have not owned one. With the deals today, you can get a grand off a Rubicon.. that gives you a lot of machine for a decent price. The more I ride that thing, the more I like it. I swear it will climb straight up

I had the same prob and went with the Rubicon...GREAT machine...I dont think the 2wd and 4wd is that big of a deal...I think it steers good for a 4wd...but if you are gonna do some explorin somewhere you arent familiar with...the GPS on the Rubicon is great and very easy to use...ive rode 450's before...dont think you can go wrong with either machine...and you are right dragginbutt...thing will climb STRAIGHT up

(IMO) The Rubicon is possible Honda’s best “all around” trail machine. It has racks big enough to tie a lot of gear to, and the suspension to carry that gear. The full time 4x4 is not that bad to get along with, I don’t feel the need for a 424 unlocker. The Rubicon is no dragster but it’s quick enough. In low range you some times get the feeling you could climb a telephone post with it.

You better ride both if you can, two completely different ATV's. Bought the Rubicon because of the transmission, greatest transmission ever put in an ATV. It will be years before anything even comes close.

The hydrostatic transmission on the Rubicon is the same type of transmission that is used on heavy construction equipment and tractors.
Now, if Honda put the hydrostatic transmission on the Foreman.....
