I just put a stage 2 hotcam in my friends 400ex. He had a fmf pipe and K&N air filter with no lid. The cam only required new gaskets(no rockers). The cam made a huge diference on top end. It wanted to keep reving, did not level off like when stock. It did loose some low end grunt, but it was worth it.
After runing it for about a month he wanted more. So I talked him into a 39mm FCR carb(with thumb cable). We installed the carb and it made a huge diference(more than the cam). He got the low end back and got a lot more pull through the whole rpm range. It is not tuned in 100% yet but it runs pretty good. Harder to start now without a choke. If you look at a carb we got the best price from C&D racing, also get the add on pilot screw. We did not and it is a pain in the a$$ to adjust with out it.
No experience with a big bore yet.

this is what i suggest:
10.8:1 compression je or ross piston, NOT wiseco. higher compression than this will probally require to mix race gas with premium. the je and ross are both stronger than wiseco and also have accurate compression ratings
stage 1 or 2 hotcam. i wouldn't get the stage 2 unless you do the piston. if you want more power down low or ride in trails a lot, the stage 1 is probally better. if you ride in open area a lot, the stage 2 will suit you better given that you have a high compression piston.
you can NOT use hardened rockers with these cams.
i also don't recommend the jet kit. just go buy the individual keihin jets from a dealer or where ever you prefer.
more than likely a new oil tank will not cool the oil but just hold another quart. the oil coolers are suppose to cool the oil some but they are expensive. i am not running an aftermarket oil cooler or tank on my 10.8 comression 406. i actually recommend smaller than a 440, but thats your choice.
i also don't recommend the K&N filters. they tend to pass more dust through. i run a uni with a modded lid. many people argue on this topic, thats just my opinion. if your stock filter is in good condition, i would just use that because you won't notice a difference in power with a uni, twin air, etc over the stock filter. however modding your lid or removing it may be beneficial on a built motor.
call up C&D racing to order this stuff. they are nice and will probally be able to get you the best deals. they will also be able to help you pick everything you need. their site is www.cdracingonline.com however, they don't have much on their site but can actually get almost any product you would ever need. the # is 308-696-7805.
