Default K&N Air Filter

Those of you who have installed K&N air filters on your Rinnies, tell me about the installation & the results. Specifically, does it just go in the airbox in place of the stock setup or are modifications needed; do you have to make any carb changes due to the K&N; what performance gains have you experienced due to the K&N; what about cleaning intervals compared to stock? Where is the best place to get the K&N? Thanks.

Performance gains are no better than just droping your main jet down two sizes. Stay with your stock filter. All a K&N will do is shorting the life of your quad. We have used the HMF exhaust on my brother inlaw's Rincon and no mater what jeting we used the bottem end went away. The top and mid puled alot harder but it was not worth the loss of bottom.

Harw- thanks for what seems like good advice. I was thinking about the rejetting anyway cause I'm at 8300 ft, and will be riding mostly between 7000 and 10,000 ft. However, the Rincon runs well even with the stock jetting?

Why would a K&N shorten the life of your quad? If you jet it correctly for the more air coming in, it should be a little different but not a whole lot to notice.

The HMF pipe probably didn't gain alot on the low end because it is a free-flowing application. That's why it is so loud, I believe. And a free-flowing pipe takes away low end torque, because backpressure makes low end torque.

The K&N filters flow way to much dirt. Put in or near water and mud and you will have a problem.

Here is a easy way to check your main jet. Get the quad warm and take the lid off the air box. Take it for a ride if it runs better between 3/4 to full open you are too rich go down two sizes on the main. If it runs worse you are to lean go up two sizes on the main. That is the fast way to check your main.

A K&N may allow more dirt but I strongly believe that if you use the outerwear you will elliminate this problem. Also I clean and oil mine after every trip and have never had a problem and this is with my lid off. When I get home from the desert my outerwear is filthy but my filter looks totally clean.
