400ex vs 450r
It would cost many $ just to get the power equal to the 450r, and by the time you had accomplished that you would have been better off selling the ex and buying a 450r. As for handling, you could throw the best suspension you can find on an ex, it would handle really good, but it still wouldn't match the handling of the 450r, because it goes beyond the suspension, but to a arms and chassis (no the 400ex and 450r don't have the same chassis). I love my 400ex, but it would cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ just to make it as good as a 450r. For that money you could buy a 450r and make it even better than 400ex with loads of money put into it. Reliability, the Ex is really reliable...in stock form. Once you really start putting many mods on ,enginewise, the reliability level could really drop. When boring the engine the reliabilty drops even more. I would say the 450r would be more reliable than the modded ex because it's stock.
Considering you didnt mention a price, my answer would be yes, a REALLY modded out 400ex could compete with a STOCK 450r. But keep in mind it would be a lot of $$$$$$$$$.

I have to say that I go with hondababies wrote about the difference. In stock form the 450r should be better than a 400 with alot of extra's. I have seen at XC races this fall the Yam 450 beat the 440's in the open areas, but in the woods the right rider has been able to keep up with Yam. But this was a very good rider. The team that was DQ'd at the 12 hr race was on a 440ex and they were in 7th place overall. We can only guess what the new Honda will do, but it should be better and will be better than the 400ex. How much better we will have to wait.
