400EX Wont shift
#1
Hello, I was wondering if anybody else with a 400EX has had trouble with their shifting or gears. I was letting this chick ride mine, she was going to buy it, then everytime she was trying to shift to second it would go into neutral. I tried and could not get it to go to second unless I used a lot of force, and when I did, it would pop back to neutral when I let go of the gas. I think it might be my shifting fork, but I am not sure. The sad thing is the chick did not even say sorry or offer to help pay for it to be fixed, and backed out from buying my quad. Damn. Let me know what you think of the shifting problem. NOt the chick. LOL

yea it could be the shifter, hopefully its not the internal shifting problem that has plagued many 400ex owners, including myself, but if it is internal, well you're in for ALOT of work, you have to disassemble the entire engine, split the cases, take out the trans and take it to your honda dealer for inspection. you usually cant tell just by looking at the transmission what the problem is and thats why you have to take it to your dealer, B&E Honda in valporaiso Indiana is chrgine me $65 for full trans inspection.

Yes it must be internal, cause the shifter is not hitting the case, I even took the shifter off thinking that the splines were not catching, BUt nope. I just had my engine re done last winter, you would think that Honda would have seen any worn parts. I did have third gear replaced because of pitting. Maybe they did not see the shifter fork or other gears messing up. It is going to cost some money for this repair.

I just finished fixing my 400ex for the same problem. The dogs were rounded off. I put in a new second gear on the counter shaft and a new shift fork and now it shifts great. Just got it going this morning.

I had it fixed by the Honda dealer in Wassila AK. IT was the shift detent bolt or something like that, that came loose. They did not have to spilt the case, I think they just took the one side off. I am not sure. It did not cost much, something like 2hrs of Labor. Can not remember the exact cost.
Hope this helps.
