Default help/advice with my next ATV purchase

Hi guys

I like to ask your oppinion on what to get as my next ATV.
I am selling my rubicon becasue I feel I did not get the right machine for the type of riding I do. I never need 4x4 or low gear, I don't do mud, or any farm or hunting related stuff.
just play rides , no racing.

I sure some of you had or have a variety of quads , so help me out please

here is what I am looking for.
some thing around 500 Lb. or less.
2 wheel drive will do just fine.
must have reverse gear ( even just to park the bike I need to have reverse)
I like it to have at least 1 cargo rack to haul gears on longer rides, but can live wihtout, my wife's ATV has a rear cargo rack.
something with current technology,
liquid or oil cooled with fan
I am guessing 400 cc and up
would preffer manual shift but autotrans or CV trans is fine
can be any make not only honda.

thanks in advance

zsebi,

We have rented 2-wd Ranchers a couple of times while on the Paiute Trail in Southern Utah. They are very capable ATV's. A lot of the rental places like renting Rancher's because of their dependability, gas mileage, racks (both front and rear), and they are easy to ride. They come in both manual and the ES. The ES is not like the ESP on your Rubicon, it is a manual trans with solenoid that shifts the manual gears instead of your foot. We have a 02 Rancher 4x4 ES and it is a great ATV. The ES does have better instrumentation and better floorboards. They only hold 2 qts of oil and the filters are about $6 for a Honda brand.

Good luck on your new ATV.

You want to sell a Rubi and get a Rancher or Trail Boss? Why not get a sport quad and just put an after market rack on the back? There are so many to choose from so don't just settle for a mini Rubi or less. How much do you want to spend? You could get a Warrior, Z400, KFX400, DVX400, Raptor 660, KFX700. Maybe you'd like a 4x4 if you could switch it in and out of 4 wheel drive. Something like the Eiger, Rancher 400AT, Prairie 360, Foreman 450, Kodiak 400/450. Maybe you should try an Eiger, it is switchable 4x4, higher top speed, and is sold at a reasonable price. If you want a 2x4 utility then these would be some choices- Rancher 350, Bruin, Big Bear, Eiger. If you really want either the Rancher or Trail Boss. I'd say to go with the Rancher.

If you do any heavy woods riding, get the Rancher TM. It has the tightest turn radius of any
ATV I have ever seen, and the handling is superb for the woods. I do a lot of thick woods
running, and it is the best woods quad I have ever had. Weighs right at 500 lbs.
Many of the people I ride with who have higher dollar quads are envious of the manuverability
of my little Rancher. I can zip thru the trees and keep well ahead of their Raptors and
Prairies. The Rincon and the Bruin are my only real competition, and both of them stay
behind a bit. However, get out in the open and they very quickly catch up.

If you get a new one, give it some time to seat in before calling it a dog. I was very
disappointed at first. H*ll my daughters Bayou was quicker. After a month that is no longer
true. Plenty of low end torque, and quite enough speed to suit me.

Look hard and you may find a 03 at a real good price. I got mine in very early Nov for $3350.
$3790 OTD. MSRP in Sept. was $4399.

thanks guys for the good info,
it is hard to pick one or an other.
while the rubicon is one of the greatest, i just feel at home when riding my wife's polaris trail boss, but that is just me.
the rubi is a power house, but it is over kill for me. it feels like I am driving an elephant, powerful and mellow, heavy.
i ride mostly on rocky (from ball bearing to fist size rocks) technical terrain where speed and power has no use,
as far as performance quads go , yes... I would like t have one but I do my fast and crazy riding on a dirt bike, ride quads only when the family tags along, at that time a kiddo (2 or a 7 year old)sits front of me.
you see that is why I am ruling out a sport quad.

here is my dilemma:
my rubi is 2001 with only 430 miles 80 hours on it. I gues i would sell it for $4500
a new 2X4 rancher 350 TM out the door would be around $4000, i would nearly spend the same to get rid of my almost new rubi, and to get a new rancher , and there is a huge difference between the 2 machines.
I'e been looking for a used rancher but no luck.

I can sympathize with you on the used Rancher problem. Not many who have them
want to get rid of them. I looked for 6 months and never found a single one.
Now that I have one, I can see why.

My nephew recommended the Rancher to me after having rode them in Afganistan on recon
missions. He knew the kind of riding I did and thought it would be perfect for it. He
was right. They had Polaris Sportsman there too, and they were constantly breaking down,
where the Ranchers went on and on with out a single breakdown during his stint.
