426 kit or 440 kit

Default 426 kit or 440 kit

i was wondering which kit to buy.....i was thinking with the 426 kit a JE piston 13:1 and a stage2 camand maybe port and polish....already got a curtis sparks full exhaust...or should i do a 440 kit with either a 12or 12.5 piston and a stage 2cam..... what would the difference in speed be????? any advise??

IMO, I wouldnt go with a 13:1. This is just me, but a 416 or a 440 would be the way to go , I too am getting a kit in the spring on mine, I just havent decided on if I want to run a full bore job, or just a 416. I heard lots of good about the 416......Im not sure on actual speed, but your gaining a ton of torque. I think you should consider the 12.5 over the 13:1 though..... Good luck!! A 426 or a 416 are about the same. Its just one more bore. It all depends on $$$. If you do a 440, when it comes time for a bore, you will have to re-sleve. Thats the last bore in the sleve. You also have to have that big bore sleve installed. This will add around $200-$250 to the intitial cost of the build, over a 416 or 426, which allows you to just bore into the stock sleve. So you only need to pay for a piston and bore, not a piston, sleve, re-sleve, and bore. I had a 426, that would run right with a buddies 440. But I had a diff. carb. He would have been faster with my carb. Most pistons that claim 13. 5 to 1 are not actually that compression, you have to set up the deck height to achieve those numbers, so ask the question, I know Ross makes a true 12.2 to 1. Thats what I would run. I would do a 416, like TNT said, but only because you have a few more bores left in the sleve. You are not going to feel 10cc's. You are going to feel a good set up, a properly tuned carb, a good choice for a cam (relative to your riding style), a good port/polish job.
I had a stage 2 Hot Cam as well. I am not a fan. Its a top end cam, I ride in the dunes, where top end is good, but you have to ride it really hard to keep it in the meat of the power band ( I also think my bigger carb helped this situation expose itself), I had a Carillo rod, and a trued and welded crank, so I could rev it out, but it still made me nervous to ride it that hard all the time, with the heating issues and all.
Have you done your suspension yet? If not, I HIGHLY SUGGEST spending your money their first.

I agree totally.. I am more into having more and my bottom end and my mid range. I also would rather have good ole reliablitly... And yes.... suspention is best to get first IMO also..... I just got mine.......[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

im not really worried about the money part so much,,,,i got a guy thats goin to do all the work for me i just got to buy all the parts and hell put it together.....its a 99 400ex its got alot of stuff on it already,,, just no motor work.... been hearing alot of good about the 440 kit just worried about over heating..

You will have to buy a sleve if you go 440. So its only a littel more now, but don;t forget, it will be more when its time for a new piston too, you will have to buy another sleve and have it resleved everytime you need a piston.
Overheating issues are not huge, but if you are running up hills, not going too fast and the engine is moving fast, you can have heating issues.
I highly recommend a FST extra oil radiator. I woul recommend this with a 416 or 426 over a 440 (same money, more reliable)

Hey definitly go with the 416 or 426 I was contiplating the same thing but have made up my mind to go with the 416 better reliablity. Go with a different cam hot cam have a bad ticking sound from what I hear. Make sure you do a stage1 cam a stage2 is too much came for that small of a bore.

stage 2 cam is just fine in my 406. as long as you do a 10.8 compression piston, you will be fine. the stage 2 opens up in the upper gears where the stage 1 opens up right from the start down low. some of the stage 1's do seem to tick. i don't have any ticking issues with my stage 2. maybe a tad louder than stock, but that is given with a more aggressive cam. you probally won't notice any power difference between the 406 vs the 416. this is what i was told when i bought my cam/piston combo. i think the compression ratio is more important than the size of the bore. if you go higher than 11:1 compression, you will probally want to get larger head studs so they don't pull out. good luck
