I have run a K&N with Outerwears on all my bikes for years, with no problems, and that is in nasty desert conditions. I find them much easier to clean than foam. I do have 3 filters for each bike (one on the bike, one in the wash, and one ready to go), and I change them out as soon as the Outerwears gets moderately dirty.
If you are a neglectful owner, stick with the foam.

I run K&N's on both my TRX250R and My LT250R and i think they perform so much better than foam. Plus i heard that you are garanteed a 5% horsepower gain with a K&N. And they are much easier to clean than a foam. They do cost a bit more but it's worth it.

recon is absolutely right. If you clean and oil your filter after each trip you should have no problems. I do this and for extra safety I use the outerwear and have never had any problems on my bikes.

K&N filters are all hype. The only advantage that you have with a K&N over a UNI, Pro Flow, Twin Air, etc. etc., is the ease of cleaning. If you seriously believe their claims to a 5% HP increase with just the addition of an air filter, then you have deffinately been hitting the pipe a little too often. All they and DynoJet do is hype up their products. Do they help out? Sure they do, just not like they claim. Have you ever seen that little advertisement that DynoJet runs as a side bar of a page in the mags? It shows a Dyno chart of a Raptor with a DynoJet kit installed. Well, the #'s are something like an increase from 37hp to 43hp. The dyno doesn't lie, right? Well DynoJet does. I know the guy that owns the Raptor that they tested, and I took it out for a spin the day that he got it back from DynoJet. That dyno chart shows my buddy's Raptor in stock trim, and then outfitted with a White Bros. E-Series slip-on and jet kit. The advertisement doesn't say anything about an exhaust, now does it? We laughed our butts off when we actually saw the ad in the mags because my buddy pulled out his dyno chart and we compaired the two, showing that they lied.
Why did I mention DynoJet? Because they are usually in cahoots with K&N with their "Power Up" kits and this is the one story that I have to explain how these companies do a little bit more than STRETCH the truth.

Way back when, my 400EX had a White Bros. Powerfilter on it (good flowing foam filter!). I put a K&N on, without a rejet just to see the difference. The bike was so lean it could hardly run! The K&N gives you WAY MORE AIR!! You just have to be **** about cleaning and maintenance!
Look at the jetting changes you will have to make with the K&N. That tells the story.
