I am sorry to say that I think that Honda has let everyone down again with the new 450. The thing doesnt even have electric start. I know people will say wuss and you dont need it. It sure is nice not to have to kick the dang thing after you stall it in a race or anywhere. I was hoping that honda would make a aluminium frame with a motor that hasnt been detuned and has EFI. I hope I am wrong about the Honda but they have fell behind for several years now.

Uh oh...another complainer. Sigh....

Actually, I've given this some thought and I have a different perspective on why the 450R doesn't have electric start.

In the very early seventies, possibly '70 or '71, Chevrolet released a special edition of the Corvette that had much more power than the other Corvette variants available at that time. I can't remember the model designation of that particular model, but it was something along the lines of the much more modern ZR1 models of just a few years ago.

Anyway, this particular Corvette had more than 450hp, straight from the factory. I have even read that that figure was underrated(!!) and that the actual horsepower was even higher than advertised. Knowing that there was a risk that these cars would fall into the wrong hands of drivers that weren't ready for that kind of power, Chevrolet or GM would not manufacture these cars with air conditioning as well as some of the other comfort accessories found on the other Corvettes of that year. In addition, the price, as you can imagine, was significantly higher than that of the other Corvettes.

In other words, to keep these cars out of the hands of posers and wannabes that would end up hurting or killing themselves and others, GM decided to make them less desirable to the masses. Who knows, this ultimately may have saved some lives as well as a lot of lost money due to potential litigation. Regardless, over time this Corvette has become one of the most sought after and desirable Corvettes of all.

Now, as this story applies to the Honda TRX450R. I believe the lack of electric starter on this particular quad is an effort by Honda to keep some posers and wannabes from buying them and less about the so-called weight savings. And I don't blame them.

The TRX450R is a serious effort by Honda to provide its loyal riders with a machine they can take to the races and take first place. This is not a machine for the trail riders, the easy riders, or the faint of heart, though some will fall into those hands. This is a race bike.

To sum it all up, if you don't like this quad because it doesn't have electric start, that's your problem, not Honda's. Get over it or go buy a Yamaha! This is THE machine Honda racers have asked for.

Have a good day!

This is not a machine for the trail riders...
Let me make an amendment here. This is not a machine for the AVERAGE trail rider.

How about that?

I think MALOCHALA has a very good point. I also believe that is why the 450R does not come stock with the HRC kit installed as well. The HRC kit and kickstart will not be for all riders. The 450R with the HRC kit, proper jetting, filter and full exhaust will be a quad to be reckoned with on the track, GNCC, dunes, trails etc.

If you don't like the new 450, then don't buy one. But how can you knock a quad that so far has only had positive reviews?
Besides that, what are you comparing it to? The YFZ? The Honda reliability, handling and ergonomics will speak for themselves. This quad was intended for those who wish to push it harder than the average Joe.

Just wait another year or so and Suzuki will have copied the design of the YFZ and 450R. Then you will have your Z450 with electric start, reverse, hand warmers, sun visor, six pack rack and tampon changer.

There are very many loyal honda riders and for good reason. They put out a good product.
