titanium frame for 250r
#1
Hey guys, I just went to the THQ motocross races this weekend and one of the venders there had a full titanium frame for the 250r. Its supposed to be 12 lbs. I was wondering how much the stock frame weighs and would that weight savings (and strength) be worth $6810.00.... wheeeew. Do any amatures get these or is it mainly for the pros sponsor that picks up the tab?
Just wonderig, I was kind of shocked by the price.

that frame is illigal in all AMA events. It is only legal in non AMA events like that. the reason is cost and durabilty. Titanium will has a history of breaking and not giving any warning before hand. They did use this frame at the 12 hr race in franceand it flexed so much that it made them run slower from the wrod that I was given. the metal does not crack, it just breaks. You used to see handlebars made with it, but they broke so much they quit making them.

I think they could make these Ti frames just as ridged as a CrMo frame by kicking down and using a few more cross bars and down tubes. By analyzing the structural properties of these chassis there are key points where there should be bracing and there is none.
I do drag racing and a lot of the frames being produced now are being made out of Ti. We proved that by adding only 2 tubular braces (1 cross tube and 1 down tube) we increased the structural rigidity by 50%.
