The best way I have found to bleed the brakes is to take some type if squirt bottle fill it with brake fluid (DOT 4 only) and put a clear tube on the squirt bottle and put the other end on the bleeder and then pump the fluid into the caliper first until the fluid starts pumping out of the reservoir and there are no more bubbles coming out of the reservoir. This will ensure that the caliper is air free because you bled it in the reverse of which the fluid flows. Also make sure you have no leaks at either end of the brake line or it will not be able to be blead. I used thread sealer on my front brake lines. I hope this helps.

I would suspect that after the hole was made, most of the fluid leaked out. That could be why you did not have any fluid squirt out.
