I want a new quad, and I can get a 250X fairly cheep. Should I buy and mod it, or wait and get a 400EX?

Just depends on if you want payments on a new quad for a couple of years or not. I personnaly like having my 96 350XX that has been payed off for a long time and is totally different from anything out there. All these 400 guys seem to get pissed when these old bikes like mine beat them! hehehe!

you are the only one that can answer that!....depends on the bike...condition and your riding preferance.....my personal experience is i have spent half the value of the bike on keeping it going in the last two years, so if i had that money and known, i would have brought a late model 300ex instead,
if money is no worries a modified 250x would be cool, but at the end of the day it is still a 250x, still only realisically expect a resale value of a average 250x (you may never see the money again).....but a 400ex is a new quad and will hold its value in the marketplace and is faster standard!...hope you can understand where i am coming from.....don't get me wrong the 250x is a great bike (i own a '92)......and parts for modifing a real common therefore cheaper?.....just expect higher running costs (ie seals and bearings)....and a bit more downtime doing the maintenace.....i don't mind this because i love machinery, and bikes and stuff

hope this helps

a 250X with a 350X engine is as fast as a 400ex
but if money aint the issue just get the 400ex

I would just get a 250X, you can spend 5,700 on a new 400EX and have just as much fun on a 250X that you only paid 1,500 for.

Stick some mods on that 250x with your spare cash and have fun.

if you wreck it? Big deal, it's not brand new perfect quad!

I've never actually owned a new quad, but i think it would be near impossible to start taking it through mud. And really when i paid near 6,000 for it!

and if I keep it a fairly long time I will probably do some rather insane motor mods... probably a 330 kit. Is that possible from a 250 motor? Can it keep up with a slightly modded 400EX?

yes the 330 kit works with the 250X (same bore size as a 300ex) dunno how close it would be to a 400ex
