Default Rancher AT Serviced today

I took the Rancher AT in today for service. The valves were adjusted, the idle was wrong, the carb was not set right. They adjusted the back brakes, checked all fluid levels. Changed oil. I get out of there with paying 130.40 The front end was off, they caught that and adjusted it.

I just got home and boy does it hum. It was backfiring, and now when you kick the throttle open, this thing flies.

They charged 4.80 for shop materials and also 2.00 for hazardous waste. I suppose the waste oil. Funny thing is they burn it for heat. LOL. That is a real killer. I pay their heating bill with my used oil plus pay them to use it. They said it took 3 qts of oil to fill it. Does that sound about right. I thought someone on here said almost 4 quarts.

Glad it is fixed, from your earlier post you sounded pretty upset.

Thank you. I was upset. This being my first quad. Also the amount of money invested. I will enjoy it. Just seems too bad that all techs do not set the units up right the first time. This one was on the floor for 2 weeks before I bought it. I know they are only human, but what a difference the valve adjustments, carb adjustments made to the overall running and power.

Now bring on spring and lots of trails. Snow is okay to push, but I want to ride the trails.

Good news south of Lincoln Nebraska, some big wheel is trying to set up a riding place with lots of trails. Hope it goes over.

RancherAT400,

Did you ask what the second service entailed? How much would the second service cost and when do you schedule the second service?

Second service is same as first with additional changing of rear end oil, and air filter, check valves again. 100 hours or 600 miles which ever comes first. They want 225.00 for this service.

I guess it is no big deal. I have the extended warranty and then with me keeping the copies of the tickets, my unit should be in great shape. I am not mechanically inclined so better safe than sorry.

Sounds like your Honda dealer is better at service than mine. I caught the front wheels being out of
spec on adjustments, I caught the clutch being improperly adjusted, and I double checked the valves
after first service and they were at .007, not .006. They won't see my quad again.

But, good to hear you are now satisfied. Looks like the American made Hondas get out of the factories with more problems than the Japanese ones did. Not surprising.

Did you let them know that you were not happy? I would have.

I hear ya rancherat400,

I'm not mechanically inclined either. I will be taking my rancher at in the end of this month - purchasing the extended warranty - and I guess I will be saving up for the second service when I get the 100 hours or 600 miles. I wish it would warm up so I can ride. I haven't noticed anything wrong with the quad - maybe they serviced it correctly before I bought it. I think they had it on the floor for over a month before I bought it. This is my first and only quad - but I sure do like it.

Oh yes, I let them know immedeately about the wheels and clutch and valves, and took it back to them
3 days after first service to get it all fixed. And I reamed the mechanic for misadjusting the clutch.
He adjusted it the way you adjust a Kawi clutch, which was his last job, but now he knows
better. BUT, if they had competent techs this would have all been caught at first service and
the would have been no need for a second trip, which is 25 miles one way for me. Blew a good
afternoon I could have been riding it.

Then after I got it home the second time, I found it wouldn't idle more than 1 minute, they had stuffed the gas cap vent hose in wrong and pinched it and no fuel was getting into the carb.
no air in, no fuel out. Took me two hours standing in the cold with the quad in the back of my truck to figure that one out. I reamed them on that one too.

You are absolutely right. They should have trained mechs. If we pay good money, they should have the expertise to stand behind the high prices we pay.

I would be as upset as you were. I had to drive 35 miles one way. That is the closest Honda Dealer, also the one I bought the quad from. When you have over 6000 dollars invested in a machine, the last thing you want working on it is a shade tree mech.
