Jets is what controls how much gas gets into your cylinder. Pilot jets are what feeds your motor gas from the carb at idle- 1/4 throttle. The needle is what controls the mid range of your throttle, and the mian is what controls 3/4 and up of you throttle. In each of these little round things there is a hole that the gas will go threw. You want your motor to be crisp. Not to much air, and not to much gas, and this is hwo you control that. When you make a change to your bike that effects the air flow (pipe, filter, porting) you will need To usually re-jet with bigger jets because more air will be geting into your cylinder and you will have to get more gas into it at the same time to even it back out.

I read the article. How come you never hear of people changing the throttle valve cutaway. I am always hearing about the pilot, main, and the needle and i understand all of those now. Is the throttle valve just not as important or does minor mods, like pipe, filter, reeds, and other little gains not affect it?

The reason most people dont change the cut away(slide), is because they are hard to come by, are realitvly expensive, and only effect 1/8 to 1/4 throttle. Most guys are holding the thumb open a bit further, than that.
