I am getting ready to buy an atv for the first time and I have no clue where to start. I decided this today, after walking up and down over 200+ acres on foot, in the heat. I do know this, it will be a Honda. But I don't know which model is best suited for my needs. I want to spend $3,800-$4,200 on a good, used 4x4. My applications would be for farm use on the weekends: check fences, search cattle, etc. Not really looking for high performance, but looking for a good ole, reliable atv that has adequate power and can manuever around pretty good. I know I am showing my ignorance here, but I need a little help from some of you Honda guys. Any particular models I should keep an eye out for? Thanks!

 

I would suggest looking for a TRX300. Total sales of this model are over 500,000. It has a bullet-proof, dependable motor and has been around for years. Parts are readily abailable. Good luck. Let us know what you get and how you like it.

 

Thanks for the tip. I have heard other people rave about liquid-cooled engines lately. Would an air-cooled atv work fine? I know there is a significant difference in the price, but would it be worth going the next step up for what I need?

 

TxDoc is right, for the money there is probably no better choice for a first ATV. The 300 Honda is unequaled in reliability and dependability. It is also economical to operate and maintain.
Also it is priced easily in your range for a good used quad.

 

Fear not; properly-designed air-cooled engines work just fine; and, the Honda 300's design is adequate and proven.

Look at it this way; an air-cooled engine is simpler than a liquid-cooled mill (fewer parts, less maintenance); and, an unlimited free supply of coolant (air) is always available!

While I'd maintain lots of adequate 300 cc utility quads exist, if you're hung up on Honda, you can't go wrong. Try it, you'll like it!

tree farmer is right on the air cooled engines, the 300 4x4 is a great bike.....later ones came out with a fan on them didn't they?....just run a high quality oil and change it often (+filter), and the mill won't give any problems.....they are a tough quad

 

The 300 4x4 is definitely the way to go on that one. One of the best utility quads ever built. Look up reliability in the dictionary and you'll find a picture of the Honda 300 4x4.

get the honda 3004x4 and lots of companys make aftermarket products for them also

 

you can't go wrong with the honda 300 4x4, it is the toughest and most dependable bike ever made.

 

Banshee. Great utility quad! Hehe, naw, I'm just messin. Just seeing all these "cant go wrong with a TRX 300" I had to say get a Banshee! hehe Great towing machine, cant beat the torque of a 2-stroke!! hehe, dont think I'm on crack.....just jokin with y'all. My friend had a TRX 300, nice quad, but my Blaster wasted him, so he bought a 400EX and I bought a Warrior....now he can waste me :-(
