I need to do an oil change in my Rancher and I am curious as to what oil to run and how much oil it takes to do the change. Do any of you use aftermarket oils? The manual says to use Pro-Honda GN4 oil. I found out that the Honda shop here uses Torco oil and NOT the Honda oil. Any input???

Use SAE 10W-40 oil (2.6 qts.). Honda oil is nothing but normal oil plus about 3$ quart.

I used Honda oil, GN-4 & filter to change the oil in my Rancher a few weeks back. I will probaly change oils once my warrenty period is up.

Oh yeah, I use 10w-40 for winter & 20w-50 for summer.

Is the filter hard to change. I see the cover on the side of the motor with the 3 bolts. Does it just pop out and back in again? Just curious...

Thanks,

chris

Yep the oil filter just pops out on the Rancher. Just loosen the three bolts. Don't forget to lube your oil gasket when putting in the new filter.

Use ONLY honda oils. The eng. oil also lubercates your differentials, If it is good enough for Honda, its good enough for me, even though it costs a little more.

Fellas,

Oil is oil…especially for a modded lawn mower engines. Think about it. If Honda oil was such a superb product, don't you think we would be seeing it in our selection for our automobiles? Generally, before I make such statements as the one above, I research. However, in this case, I don't think it is needed.

I am sure someone will have a contradicting opinion, and if so, please provide the stats .

I use Valvoline 20W-50 in the summer along with a WIX filter. I've heard and only heard, Honda may manufacture the WIX filter. Apparently, the informant worked for NAPA (who carries WIX) and inadvertently came across the supposed fact. Regardless, WIX is a very good filter, which I chose previous to the later knowledge.

You mention getting a filter at Napa...Do most autoparts stores carry filters for the Rancher? I was not aware that auto parts stores carried filters for ATV's. Also, I read that Auto oil uses different additives then a "Motorcycle" oil does. This could be a bunch of junk but I would rather stick to Motorcycle oil in case of problems in the future that would require Warranty Work. That way that can not say "You did not use the specified oil..."

Thanks for the feedback!
