Any JASO MA oil. Your owners manual recommends Honda GN4 (dino oil) or HP4 (dino/synth blend). I run HP4 in my 400's. How long have you had this machine? You are just checking the oil now? I rarely go more than 20 hrs without an oil change, and usually more like 10 hrs on the sport bikes. If you want your baby to last, frequent oil changes are the way to go!

I run the Bell Thumper oil in my 400 and it is very good stuff. Kinda pricee but I would rather spend alittle extra now than a whole lot later....I would suggest a good Synthetic Blend 20-50 That weight covers most elements depending on your location...

400EX is a dry sump engine, it has a special checking procedure. Not just when the engine is warm, you must allow it to idle, without blipping the throttle, on level ground for 3 - 5 minutes. then wait just a couple minutes and check. CHECK your manual for the procedure if you want the right amount of oil in your machine.
