450r vs yfz 450
#2
Some friends of mine have (2) different Yama 450s - one completely stock and another with GYTR pipe and cam .. and 13tooth gearing
I raced the modified 450 up the sand dunes in CA over and over - and they are very very close. Even the guy riding the Yamaha said it was close.
I raced the stock one up - and kicked his bootie every time - of course, i didnt race mine stock - so maybe some difference.
we also drag raced down about 3 mile strectch.. amazingly, we were alot closer here.. the first 3 gears i was in front - but after 4th - Yamaha revs higher and it does catch up very very slowly - iI may add. I had the GPS with me and we both finished up at slightly over 75mph - but thats prob because it was loose sand - on extremely hard pack - im sure its closer to 80 !
HOWEVER,
TORQUE POWER - now way YAMAHA. Raced up a very steep sand dune - both of us in 2-3rd gear going straight up --- guess what Yamaha had 4 lenght head start - everytime i caught up to it and passed it.
that translates to low end torque/power - which is where most people ride --- in trailes or dunes...
the Yama riders were very UNBIASED ! AND even they said - Hey were' "TIED' for first place ! Only on the drag strip was it obvious that the Yama450 was slightly faster.
ALL i can tell you is this - they are soooooo fast - and so close - its all a matter of color.
I PREFER RED !!!
HOPE THAT HELPS.

you can believe all that BS - but Ripper - this AINT no 400ex !
I had one for 4yrs - and I can tell you thats just the die-hard Yamaha fans talking.
BTW, I forgot to mention if you dont mind the engine knocking all over the place - get Team Blue.
If you want smooth consistent power all over the powerband, then forget about it - HONDA did a good job on this.
Much better job than Yamaha in my opinion.
and after this last wknd after spending some time riding with Team Blue - I ALSO got to drive the Y -- I was convinced that I made the right decision.
Like i said, its a matter of taste - but if you havent riden this - im telling you its so much faster than the last generation of ATV's-- that when I hear people say that its nothing but a 400ex -- they are completely 'wacked'.
Both bikes are good - and very very close - especially once you put your basic pipe/rejetting - they are almost the same - except for
comfort
quality
ergonomics
powerband
color
size/fit for the rider...
other than that -- GET WHATEVER color you prefer.

TT racing is all about horsepower, always has been, always will be. I've raced 3 nationals this year and can tell you this. They are close... very close. If both machines had just a pipe both machines power is equil, however the honda does have more of a "tractable" powerband, the yamaha seems pipey. This week at paducah it was very slick... I could gain on most yamahas through the infield, but they would gain on me down the straight. But these gains did not make or break the race. In a good riders hands, with the right setup, both machines are potent TT weapons. But we will see after a couple of years how reliable both machine are... I think RED will privale!!!!!

i never raced them back to back, but from what ive experienced by what it has raced and i have raced i think both stock would be even. the yfz barely beats my predator and i think the 450r will beat it also because i beat a 416ex by more than the predator did. so ur getting a toomey pipe for a 450r huh 2phast....
