300ex-I think my axle bearings are bad, but I'm not sure...

it sounds like the chain is hitting the skid plate, but it's not. is that a sign of a bad axle bearing? the axle seems nice and tight, but the noise is really loud, it's not always there, it's a loud metal knock or click sound.
how much should it cost for new axle bearings to be installed, or is it possible to do it myself? my ex has a Rad carrier, not sure if that means anything...
thanks a lot guys

To find out if the axle bearings are bad put the back of the quad on a stand or tires or something so that the back tires are off the ground on there is no weight on the axle. Then when the tires are lifted grab one of them and see if you can move the axle. If you can then the bearings are shot. I had the same problem on my 400, it ended up being a missing bolt from the skid plate.

Yeah, that is a sign. The same thing is wrong with mine. The noise is the axle kinda shifting in the carrier causing the sprockets to un-align and the chain kinda skipping a tooth or something like that.

ok I took everything apart, and 1 of the bearings is shot. BUT I can't get the old bearings out of the carrier. I think I am gonna take the carrier to the ATV shop and have them replace the bearings, I don't wanna screw up the $300 Rad carrier thats in there. does the Rad carrier use the stock size bearings or different ones??
thanks

Lucky you caught it soon. Same thing happened to my 400EX, by the time I noticed it (my son was riding it) the bearing heated so much the bearing/axle carrier broke. A nice $400.00 fix!

Hey guys I have been though alot with my 300ex and just wanted to tell you, if the chain side bearing is shot, it is a good indication that you are running you chain too tight. Axle bearings in 300's and 400's have been a big problem, the trick to getting them out of the carrier is some Release all and a good flat head screaw driver and a good heavy metal hammer. Just keep going around the inner race and she will come out, try holding it on some wood to prevet damage.
When you re assemble always putt a good amount of grease were the bearing sits for easy disassembly next time, I used a peace of wood to get them back in, just don't damage the bearing tap it gently. If anyone out there is runnnin axle spacers or an over sized durablue, I would strongly consider buying a double rowed carrier. because this problem will probablu re occur.
To be honest can't beleave how durable though 2 little cartraige bearings are!!!
Well Peace out
Any questions
