Engine Rebuild
#1
Hey !
I'm in the process of rebuilding my Foreman engine ...
A mechanic equiped with a stethoscope, told me that he thinks the Bearing of the crankshaft sound strange ..
And that was also my thougth .. so I'm gonna dismember the engine ..
I reallllllly need advices and tips, because I never did that ! .. But I did some mechanic on my ATV and I feel I can handle
it ..
I already setted up my working place, cleaned the engine ...
Now, I know I will need some parts, like Piston Rings, maybe some bearings, and the worse, a new crankshaft . . .
I found a place on the net : www.bikebandit.com
Seems like a good place to order those parts . ..
What do you think ?!
I think I'm gonna stay with OEM parts, I want to stay with Reliability .. .
So, Does a Rebuild kit is affordable for my situation, or is it better to buy individual parts.. ?
Oh, Btw, the mechanic told me that he think that this engine was run without oil before ...
(- The ATV is used, and I don't know how the previous owner was doing -)
Any tips will be greatly Appreciated!
Thanks !!!!

Well first of all, before you worry about parts you need to tear it down. You may not be able to go with oem. You will need to get your cylinder checked out and be sure you dont have to bore it. Just because its a newer machine doesnt mean you can go with the standard bore. You would be better off to order the kit. (piston, rings, wrist pin) and then order your gasket kit. As far as the crank goes good luck. I dont know if I would atempt this with out the pros help being your first time and all. If the bearings are bad you will need to bring it in to get the crank pressed apart unless you have the tools. Around here they charge around $75 just to do this. Make sure you know where the motor is when you take it apart and put it back the same way so you dont mess the valves up. I think you will do fine if you just replace the top end but the bottom end is much more work for a first timer and you may want to think that over. Well good luck and let us know what you do with it. Oh ya what kind of noise is it making? My grizzly was making some noise up a little higher I tore it down and the center of the wrist pin had a grove in it and the piston where the wrist pin goes through was worn out. My connecting rod and crank bearings look good though. So I was lucky not having to tear the lower down. Still waiting for my parts.

Hmmkay !!
I'll try to exlpain the sound .... The guy gave me his stethoscope so I can listen carefully to the sound ..
The sound is coming from the bottom end, near where I put the oil in the engine ...
In this place, I think there is the clutch ?? .. And surely a bearing .. Because there is the flywheel there . .
Maybe it is the Flywheel bearing or whatever, I don't know for sure how it looks like down there .. .
The guy told me it may be the crankshaft bearing ...
The sound at Idle is like listening to a skateboard bearing!! .. and when I go higher in RPM, there is some vibrations and
the sound is much louder . ...
My father have a Fourtrax, it is NEW and the engine sounds ok ! .. So I listened to the same place, and I still hear the bearing at
Idle, but at Higher RPM the sound doesn't increase louder and there is no vibration !
Also, is an old Engine like mine (4000 miles) sounds like a new one ?!.. I mean, let say you have a foreman 2004 and a foreman 98
in good shapes ... Does the engine has the same sound, or effectively the sound becomes different with the age?!
Because my engine does not sound like his ... I know it's not the exact same thing, his is a 350, mine a 450 .... My valves are clapping
louder than his, even when adjusted . . .. and his engine seem so smoooooth by the sound ... Mine is screaming and vibrating ....
The engine is still going very very strong!! I don't sense any loss of power . ..
It is just the sound that is annoying me, because it seems to become worse, so I don't want to mess everything . ..
Anyways, it sounds like something is loose inside . ... And I think the clutch engage at 1500 rpm .. so maybe it is not even an engine
bearing, but simply the clutch !???? ...
Talking about the press.. My father have an Hydraulic Press, it is home-made and used for cutting or bending steel ... But I could use
it, I just have to figure out how the one they use in machine shops are ...
Do you think I could sell the parts that I don't want !? ... Do you think someone would be interested in broken parts ?!?
What do you mean by messing up the valves!? ... I assume you mean to put back every parts where it was, like, not swapping
one valve with the other!? ..
Anyways!!
Thank you very much for your help !!

Polariss500 . . .
Well, It was an assumption that the guy did run the engine without oil . . .
I don't think the guy ran the engine ALWAYS without oil ...
The guy showed me that about each 6 months he went to the dealer for them to check the quad .. .
Anyways, maybe the guy ran without oil the last times he rode it, and found that the engine did some strange
noise so he sold it ...
But that's ok, if I can repair it, I don't even mind, I like to play inside things ...
